What's been happening in India?

Landworkers' Alliance website and Instagram

The Landworkers' Alliance are a grassroots organisation from the UK who have been sharing some super helpful information about the protests in India.

Start first by having a look at the group's Instagram. Their account often shares the voices of people from the Indian diaspora who, although based in the UK, are still personally impacted by these protests.

Then I'd suggest taking a look at this quick article from the group that gives information on the protests and the bills they are protesting again.

Finally, take a look at the Landworkers Alliance call to action. They are not asking  you to write to your MP to stop the Indian Government from making these reforms. Instead they are finding others ways to support the farmers in India.

Before making any decisions or writing to your MP, make sure to take a look at these other articles so you can make up your own mind on this complicated matter.

Neville Lazarus. 'Why are farmers in India protesting?' for Sky News

I'm always wary of biases of the UK media, particularly from Sky. However, this article from Lazarus provides a good, simple grounding on what is happening in India.

If you're in a rush, but want to have more of an understanding of the protests, I would definitely check this out. for those of you wanting more in depth knowledge, I'd suggest pairing this article with the rest of this reading list.

Shruti Menon. 'India Farmer Protests: how rural incomes have struggled to keep up' for BBC reality check

I really like this article from Menon as it manages to state the complicated facts of this protest, without leaving you completely lost. Its a longer read then some of the other articles, but gives more of an insight into the history of India's farming and agricultural industries. This knowledge is important to have in order to fully understand all the factors at play in this protest.

Suman Sanket. 'Indian Agriculture Problems: 7 major problems of Indian Agriculture' for the Economic Discussion Net.

The Economic Discussion Net is a forum for people to write and learn about economic situations across the world. It is unclear how they choose their authors, however this particular article gives a really clear insight into some of the factors impacting India's farming and agricultural industries.

Unlike the other articles above, Suman is the only person who has pointed out the impact climate change has, and will continue to have, on Indian crop efficiency. This is important to bear in mind and must drive us to action; unless we tackle climate change and the ecological crisis, farming industries and its workers around the world will suffer.
